As a politician and a father, I am concerned with the condition of the planet we will be leaving to future generations. The same factors degrading air and water quality in too many communities are also contributing to long-term climate change. Must it be our legacy to be the generation that presided over the destruction of the world’s coral reefs, the melting of the polar ice caps, and the flooding of the world’s most populous coastal plains? If we – as consumers, communities, industries and governments – commit to sustainable practices and policies, economic and environmental interests do not have to be mutually exclusive.
