The best scientific evidence demonstrates that human activities, especially our choices of energy production and consumption, are producing global climate change. We should take action now to provide alternatives that can halt and even reverse this trend. In Kansas, with our extensive wind energy resources, I have challenged electric utilities to have 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy installed within the next 10 years. This is equivalent to 10% of our current capacity, and we expect to be halfway to that goal in only 3 years. As Kansans and Americans, we can make a difference by embracing energy conservation and efficiency, developing renewable energy resources, and working together to make smart policy choices on energy issues across the board. These measures will also add to our nation’s energy diversity and security while providing real environmental and economic benefits to all of us. The “Stop Global Warming Virtual March on Washington” is a fitting way to move forward toward achieving these goals.
