Shortly after I launched into space, I floated to the window and looked down at the Earth below. When I looked toward the horizon, I saw something striking: a very, very thin blue line outlining the planet. This pencil thin fuzzy line is Earth’s atmosphere. It looks so fragile but it’s all that protects us from the vacuum of space and makes Earth a habitable planet. What could be more important than protecting our atmosphere? America’s response to the launch of Sputnik energized a generation. We inspired a generation to step off the planet. A response to the challenge of climate change could energize and mobilize this generation just like the space program did 50 years ago. Imagine millions of kids dreaming of being the scientist or engineer who helps save our planet!
