Former Mayor Will Wynn, Austin, TX
- Location: TX 78701

I like to say Austin is an indispensable city in the fight against global warming. We’re the capital city of the most polluting state in the most polluting country in the world. And yet, we’re proving that we can meet the energy needs of one of the fastest growing cities and thriving economies in the nation through an innovative and aggressive strategy of conservation, efficiency and renewable power. Under the Austin Climate Protection Plan we’re going to make our entire City fleet of vehicles and all our municipal facilities and operations carbon-neutral by 2020. We’ve placed an immediate CO2 cap and reduction plan on our municipally-owned electric utility. We’re implementing the most energy-efficient building codes in the nation. And we’re developing a program where citizens, businesses, community organizations and visitors can go carbon-neutral by purchasing offset credits we’ll spend on local GHG-reduction measures. Lots of folks in Austin are beginning to see climate protection as the moral issue it really is. We know the decisions we’re making today will reverberate down through future generations. So, we won’t wait. We won’t wait for the Texas Legislature or Congress or the White House to do what’s right. Instead, we’ll lead by example and, in that way, serve as an indispensable city.
