Friends of the Earth
- Marching Since: May 03, 2006
Friends of the Earth is marching because global warming is the most serious environmental threat of our time. If we don’t act now, hundreds of millions of people will be put at severe risk. The world’s poor will be particularly vulnerable to the droughts, floods, severe storms, and disease that global warming will bring.
Rising sea levels will increase flooding, contaminate freshwater and force people from their homes in the South Pacific and Caribbean islands. The intensity of severe storms will increase, making disasters like Hurricane Katrina more likely. Drought and other changes in weather patterns will hurt farmers in the United States, but will be even more disastrous in places like Africa. Water shortages will wreak havoc on the world’s poorest areas, and families and communities that rely on subsistence farming will have to struggle to cope with increasingly unpredictable weather conditions.
