I am a global-warming activist, and hopefully by the time you finish reading this book, you will be one, too. In fact, I’m guessing you are already an environmentalist, even if you don’t call yourself one yet. Perhaps that’s because it has become so common to associate the word environmentalist with such derisive terms as tree hugger or spotted-owl lover—as if caring about trees and animals is a bad thing. But whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, a Christian, a Jew, or an atheist, you undoubtedly want and need clean air and clean water, both of which are basic inalienable rights for you and your children. You may love swimming in the ocean, walking in the woods, just being outside on a beautiful spring day. Such desires are neither Liberal nor Conservative. They’re simply human. And environmentalism is the protection of those basic things. That is the accurate definition, and therefore my thesis holds: we are all environmentalists.
