The Aquarium of the Pacific
- Location: CA
- Marching Since: May 16, 2007
The Aquarium of the Pacific’ is dedicated to conserving and building natural capital — our ocean and its inhabitants— by building social capital, our visitors, our community, our region. We know very little about the ocean and how our actions are affecting this living resource. While historically the ocean has been viewed a place of abundance, we now witnessing a decline in our living seas. Global climate change creates added urgency for increasing awareness to balance the needs of humans and the health of our natural world. We strive to educate and inspire the public to care about the wondrous, magnificent creatures in the Pacific Ocean so that they will join us in developing sustainable management policies that stop, and hopefully reverse, the current projections for our planet’s environment—terrestrial land aquatic. Located in Long Beach, CA we serve 1.4 million visitors annually including 200,000 school program participants. We our proud our attendance reflects the diversity of our region—the result of focused marketing efforts including ten cultural festivals. We are now focusing on making stronger statements to our guest about global climate change. While we have featured a 3-D movie about the impacts of global warming on polar bears for four years, we are now creating programs to increase the awareness our visitors’ knowledge about many aspects o f climate change. We are including carbon footprint calculations in our visitor’s guide and map. While we are comparatively large among museums addressing this issue, we can not have a material impact acting alone. We seek our partners in many endeavors. We have joined the California Climate Registry and are honored to join the Stop Global Warming Virtual March.
